There are those fierce creature-derived nicknames — in the case of the Golden Lions concealing an older identity as Transvaal nine-time winner of South Africa’s provincial championship the Currie Cup. The venue is known officially as Coca Cola Park but rugby fans identify it more readily as Ellis Park venue for a host of famous matches including the 1995 World Cup final. Yet at the same time the game is a throwback to the past. Touring is hardwired into rugby union’s DNA. Junior teams cherish their Easter tours to the frequent discomfort of seaside hotels. National teams traditionally travelled much further and for longer.

There are plenty of big names appearing in the famous black and white jumper and a big group of Kiwis who would like nothing more than to rain on the Aussie’s parade at the SFS on Saturday. Luke McAllister is heading back to New Zealand to play for the Maori in the Pacific Nations tournament and he is keen to force his way back into the All Blacks after a stint in Europe. Chris Jack will be back in Super 14 rugby next year and he’s keen to prove to the All Black selectors that he still has what it takes to play at the elite level. Then there’s Rocky Elsom and Phil Waugh. Both will find it very strange playing against the men in gold but they both have a great chance to prove that they should be fast tracked into the Wallaby squad after their Barbarians’ stint. Both will be out of place in the visitor’s dressing room at the SFS but Elsom should get used to it after signing with the Brumbies from 2010 onwards. I had the chance to also sit down and chat to Sonny Bill Williams this week and he admitted that he was very nervous about his first game of rugby in Australia.
