Gary Harling 47 suffered severe facial injuries after becoming involved in a car park brawl between parents after a junior rugby league game at Glenwood sports oval on July 18. He was taken to hospital but police last night charged him with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray. A 34-year-old man who was arrested after the fight but released later that night was also charged yesterday with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and affray following an alleged assault. Police also charged the 34-year-old with common assault following an alleged assault upon a 16-year-old boy at the sporting complex.

Queenslander Mitchell has moved across from the Perth-based Western Force to be closer to his family the majority of whom reside in Queensland. Mitchell expressed no reservations or second thoughts about joining NSW even though he had originally expected to be playing alongside Tahu and Tuqiri. Hickey said the Waratahs’ morale had not been affected by losing Tuqiri who had his NSW and Australian rugby union contracts terminated and Tahu who has asked for a release from his contractual obligations to the same organisations. “Certainly you miss players like that.

Regional Rugby Wales the controlling organisation for regional sides the spreys Scarlets Dragons and Blues announced they have been granted a court hearing for September 9-11. The trial will decide if the Welsh Rugby Union can demand the regions release their players for the test against New Zealand in Cardiff on November 7. That date falls outside the official IRB test window and the teams aren’t obliged to release players for national duties. It’s the latest chapter in a long spat between the national union and the regional sides over the running of the professional game in rugby-mad Wales. The WRU agreed to the lucrative test without consulting the regional sides over player availability.
