"At some point he became part of my family" said Bill Gregory whose son played rugby with Sterling at St. Joseph’s Prep where the men huddled around an office computer to watch YouTube videos of Sterling’s best plays. "I lost a son. ""I lost a brother" said Gregory’s son Ryan 19 who four days earlier was tossing a rugby ball with Sterling in knee-to-waist-deep water in cean City N.

With four teams to be excluded from the Air NZ Cup’s new premier division next season the troubled joint venture between Marlborough and Nelson Bays appears a logical candidate for the drop. Tasman were on the brink of financial collapse last season and required a bail-out from the New Zealand Rugby Union to stay solvent. The sport’s governing body will not be as generous this season so the union faces multiple challenges to satisfy the NZRU’s criteria before the unsuitable provinces are axed on November 20. Fear for the future could be a natural distraction for the players but co-coach Bevan Cadwallader said the squad’s focus was squarely on improving on their quarterfinal finish in 2008.

Berrick Barnes move steals Queensland’s rugby heart

Former Wallaby prop Andy McIntyre expressed his pain by saying: "You’re kidding. It starts with the administration and I’m wondering who should resign over this. "Losing Wallaby Barnes puts pressure on the job of Queensland Rugby Union chief executive Ken Freer. Barnes 23 had emerged as "Mr Reds" with his improved playmaking from flyhalf and inside centre and the high off-field standards which are just what midfield partner Quade Cooper needs to clone. NSW high-performance manager Scott Bowen met Barnes in Brisbane last Saturday before the retention team of coach Phil Mooney Daniel Herbert Tim Horan and Dan Crowley pushed the Reds’ case passionately for a final time last Sunday. In the end it did not come down to money because his contract offer from New South Wales is at the same level as the Reds with the Australian Rugby Union top-up. "I needed a spark-up probably personally" Barnes said from Sydney yesterday.
