South African team Southern Kings originally hoped to be the newest inclusion to the league ahead of its expansion in 2011 but Melbourne was chosen as an alternative by the ARU. A fifth Australian team would be a convenient solution as the competition is set to switch to a conference-based format in two years. Three separate groups had shown an interest in forming the new outfit but the ARU said it would work with them all to present a unified bid. However a consortium backed by Victoria Rugby Union who represent rugby in Melbourne claim that they have been left out of the negotiating process.

Former Wallaby Rod McCall named new Queensland Rugby Union chairman

McCall 45 will replace former chairman Peter Lewis who stood down at the end of July. McCall played 107 games for Queensland and 40 Tests for Australia including winning the 1991 Rugby World Cup and is a current Australian Rugby Union director. He said the QRU Board’s most pressing concern was the recruitment of a new chief executive to replace Ken Freer whose resignation takes effect on ctober 31. The resignations of Lewis and Freer follow the significant loss of Wallaby inside back Berrick Barnes to Super 14 arch-rivals the NSW Waratahs last month.

The 27-year-old has endured an injury-plagued few seasons and is currently struggling with ankle ligament damage. Former spreys coach Lyn Jones said: "It wouldn’t be a surprise if he never plays again. But rugby needs him.
